Addition Within 5 Worksheets

The first addition facts children meet: two small numbers with a sum of 5 or less. These sheets work well once kids can count objects to 5 and are ready to write the matching number sentence.

What's on this worksheet

Every problem adds two numbers from 0 to 5, and no sum is greater than 5. Each sheet comes with an answer key on a separate page.

Teaching tips

  • Let children use fingers or five counters at first. Speed comes after they can show each sum with objects.
  • Point out facts with 0 early. Adding 0 keeps a number the same, which takes several problems off the "to learn" list.
  • Switch to the stacked format once kids are comfortable, so the layout is familiar before multi-digit addition.

How to use this worksheet maker

Press New worksheet for a fresh set of problems, then Print. To save a PDF instead, choose "Save as PDF" in the print window. Every sheet has a short code in the bottom corner. Copy the link to a sheet and you can print exactly the same problems again later, which is handy for retakes and for sharing with other teachers.
